Kitchen remodeling in New York City

Kitchen remodeling across New York City. What can move, what cannot, and how long you are without a kitchen.

a narrow New York kitchen mid-fit with new cabinets going in

Most New York kitchens are smaller than the ones the catalogues are designed for, and they are in rooms that were laid out for a different way of cooking. The work is mostly about getting more out of the space you have rather than moving into space you do not.

What can move and what cannot

Waste is the constraint. A sink can move a short distance along a wall without much trouble and a long distance only if there is a route for the waste that keeps its fall. Gas moves only with the utility involved. Electrical is the easy one and is rarely what decides a layout.

We work this out at the visit, because a layout that assumes the sink can move two metres is a layout that gets redrawn expensively later.

Cabinetry in a room that is not square

Almost no wall in an older building is straight, and almost no corner is ninety degrees. Stock cabinetry assumes both. The difference between a kitchen that looks fitted and one that looks placed is the scribing: filler pieces cut to the actual wall so there is no tapering gap behind the worktop.

Where stock will not do it, we make the pieces. That is the same joinery described on the carpentry and millwork page.

The days without a kitchen

Longer than people expect, and mostly at the end. The room is unusable from strip out until the worktop is templated, made and fitted, and a stone worktop cannot be templated until the cabinets are in. That gap is real and we tell you where it falls so you can plan around it.

What drives the cost

Whether services move, the cabinetry, the worktop material, and appliance choices that carry their own requirements for ventilation and power. What each of those does to the number is set out in what a kitchen renovation costs in New York City.

Questions people ask

Do I need a permit to remodel my kitchen?

If you are replacing what is there in the same positions, usually not. If you are moving plumbing or gas, or altering walls, usually yes, and your building will want its own approval as well. We tell you which case you are in at the visit.

How long does a kitchen remodel take?

You are without a kitchen from strip out until the worktop is on, and a stone worktop is templated only after the cabinets are in, so the last stretch is the longest. A kitchen that keeps its layout is a matter of weeks. Moving services, a made cabinetry run or restricted building hours each add to that, and we tell you where the gap falls before you commit.

Can you keep the old cabinets and change the rest?

Often yes, and it is a real saving where the carcasses are sound. What usually decides it is whether the doors and the worktop can be replaced without disturbing a cabinet run that will not survive being moved.
